Sony BURANO

Shoot full-frame cinema footage with the Sony BURANO, a CineAlta camera built around the 8.6K sensor of the VENICE 2. Because its color matches the VENICE 2, it also works well as a B camera alongside a VENICE.

Image and recording

The full-frame sensor records up to 8.6K and also offers Super 35 and anamorphic modes. Dual base ISO 800 and 3200 with 16 stops of dynamic range make it an excellent camera in low light, too. X-OCN LT, Sony's 16-bit raw format, records internally to CFexpress Type B cards. For smaller files, XAVC H (H.265) and XAVC are available.

Stabilization, ND and autofocus

What sets the BURANO apart is in-body stabilization that also works with PL lenses: 3 axes with PL glass, 5 axes with E-mount lenses. The electronic variable ND filter covers 0.6 to 2.1 (2 to 7 stops). Beneath the PL mount is a locking E-mount: with Sony E-mount lenses you get Fast Hybrid AF with subject recognition.

• 8.6K full frame up to 30 fps
• 6K full frame (crop) up to 60 fps
• 4K Super 35 (crop) up to 120 fps
• From firmware 2.0: 3.8K full frame up to 120 fps, Super 35 4.3K 4:3 for anamorphic up to 60 fps, Super 35 1.9K up to 240 fps (no SDI/HDMI output at 240 fps)

Good to know: in 8.6K full frame the sensor reads out more slowly than on the VENICE 2, so fast pans can show rolling shutter. For fast action, the crop modes are the better choice. Cache recording keeps the moments before you hit record, from a few seconds in 8.6K up to 73 seconds in 4K.

Our rental package

Our package comes with the BURANO fully rigged: cage with top handle, base plate with magnetic shoulder pad and 15mm rods for shoulder work, and the monitor with a Zacuto Z-Finder loupe for checking focus in bright daylight. The Sony GP-VR100 grip remote gives you record start/stop, zoom and an assignable dial. An Angelbird CFexpress Type B reader for offloading, a bebob cine CMF powerbox, a rear accessory mounting plate and a rain cover are included as well.

Power and connections

With the PL mount the body weighs about 2.9 kg, around 1.4 kg less than a VENICE 2. It draws about 50 W and runs on V-mount batteries or via 4-pin XLR (11 to 17 V). The camera has 12G-SDI, 3G-SDI and HDMI outputs, timecode and genlock via BNC, plus two XLR audio inputs.
