Description

Shoot full-frame video with the Sony FX3A, the most compact camera in Sony’s Cinema Line. S-Cinetone is the default look, so your footage matches other Cinema Line cameras without heavy grading.

FX3A or FX3?

The FX3A is the current production version of the FX3. The touchscreen now has about 2.36 million dots instead of about 1.44 million, NFC has been dropped, and the FX3A has its own firmware. Unfortunately, that means you can’t transfer settings between the FX3 and the FX3A. The sensor and recording formats, however, are unchanged.

Image and recording

The 12.1 MP full-frame sensor uses about 10.3 MP for video and covers ISO 80 to 102,400 (expandable to 409,600). Dynamic range is more than 15 stops. Internally, you can record 10-bit 4:2:2 in XAVC S-I (All-Intra, up to 600 Mb/s), XAVC S or the more efficient XAVC HS (H.265). Besides S-Cinetone you can shoot S-Log3, S-Log2 or HLG, and LUTs can be stored as metadata for Catalyst. Over HDMI, the camera outputs 16-bit raw to a compatible external recorder.

Frame rates

  • UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) up to 120 fps
  • DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) up to 59.94 fps, including true 24p
  • Full HD up to 240 fps for slow motion

Autofocus and stabilization

Fast Hybrid AF with 627 phase-detection points tracks faces, eyes and subjects in video. You can set AF transition speed in 7 steps and subject shift sensitivity in 5 steps, or simply tap the touchscreen to pull focus. The 5-axis in-body stabilization with Active mode steadies handheld and walking shots, and with compatible lenses, focus breathing compensation keeps the framing steady when you rack focus.

Built for long takes

A heatsink and a quiet cooling fan let the FX3A record 4K/60p continuously on long shoots. Two card slots take CFexpress Type A or SD cards, for relay recording or a simultaneous backup.

Audio, timecode and power

The XLR handle sits on the Multi Interface Shoe and adds two XLR/TRS combo inputs with mic/line switching and 48 V phantom power, plus a 3.5 mm input. The camera records up to four channels at 24-bit. Timecode in and out run through the Multi/Micro USB port. Use the included VMC-BNCM1 timecode adapter cable to connect it to your timecode source. The FX3A runs on Sony NP-FZ100 batteries: one battery gives you about 95 minutes of recording. You can also power the camera via USB-C Power Delivery (USB PD).

Our rental package

The camera comes in a two-part SmallRig cage with an HDMI cable holder and a clamp for the USB-C and Multi cables, so the connectors stay secure on set. The XLR handle is mounted with SmallRig attachments and has a microphone holder. A USB-A to USB-C cable, the VMC-BNCM1 timecode adapter cable and a hard case are included as well.
